Why we specialise in car park canopies
Most commercial sites have already filled their roofs with solar, or have no suitable roof at all. The car park is the last large solar surface left, and it is the one surface that can do three jobs at once: generate power, shelter vehicles, and carry the EV chargepoints that retail, workplace, and public-sector sites now have to install regardless. We built a dedicated carport practice because the engineering and the economics are genuinely different from rooftop work, and getting them right takes specialist knowledge. The steel structure is roughly 45 per cent of the cost, the planning route runs through Class OA permitted development rather than full planning in England, and the business case only works properly when solar and EV charging are modelled as one project. Generalist installers tend to get at least one of those wrong.
How we work
We are manufacturer-independent. We specify the panels, inverters, steel, and chargepoints that suit your site and your load profile, not whatever we happen to have a margin deal on. Every proposal starts with a free desk-based feasibility built from your half-hourly meter data and the car park layout, so the system is sized against your actual demand and self-consumption pattern before anyone visits site. We model the full blended return, solar savings, EV-charging income or avoided grid cost, the Workplace Charging Scheme grant, and 100 per cent Annual Investment Allowance, rather than quoting a flattering panel-only payback. If a site does not suit a carport, we say so. We would rather walk away than deliver a scheme that underperforms.
Planning and engineering handled end to end
We prepare and submit the Class OA prior-approval application for English sites, including the glare and glint study that is the single most common condition planning authorities raise, and the SuDS drainage strategy a new canopy over a car park requires. For sites in Wales and Northern Ireland, where Class OA does not apply, we run the full planning application instead. The canopy structure is engineered to BS EN 1991 (Eurocode 1) for UK wind and snow loading, with foundations designed to the ground conditions in the site survey, and signed off by a structural engineer before fabrication. The whole build is governed by CDM 2015, and we phase construction so most bays stay open while we work.
Insurance-backed warranty and maintenance
Every install carries a 10-year insurance-backed workmanship warranty, so the cover survives even if a contractor does not. The galvanised or coated steel is built for a 25-year-plus design life that matches the PV warranty. We offer 10 to 25 year operation and maintenance contracts with remote performance monitoring and underperformance alerts, and because a carport sits at low level the panel and gutter access is far easier than on a roof. You get a structure that keeps generating, and a contract that keeps it generating.
